Safra seizes the power core

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

Saffra’s retrieval of the emergency power cores transforms her from a frightened junior adventurer into the indispensable agent on whom the Convoy’s survival depends. After a level-1200 Ghul-Feather tears the engine car away from the rest of the armored train in the Emberblade Fields, the aether cannons fall silent and monsters begin gathering around the stranded carriages. Jasper identifies the only workable plan: Saffra must cross the battlefield, take two of the eight emergency cores from the Lounge, and return while Vivi’s unusually powerful defensive spells make her effectively impervious to the monster’s attacks.

Crisis on the Convoy

The Convoy is not an ordinary train but a heavily armored vehicle built to travel thousands of miles through monster-infested territory. Its squat, blocky body is layered with armor thick enough to stop a cannonball, and mana-powered turrets stand at intervals along the train, presumably serving as magical artillery. That protection becomes insufficient when the Ghul-Feather attacks. The undead avian separates the engine from the rest of the Convoy, disabling the cannons and leaving the passengers in the Emberblade Fields, where a growing swarm of monsters can approach without the train’s normal firepower.

The emergency is made worse by the creature’s rank. Jasper explains that Ghul-Feathers are generally cowardly and prefer ranged attacks, but that behavior matters only if their opponent can survive the assault. His proposed solution requires someone who can walk directly toward the monster, take the cores, and leave without being killed. The requirement appears absurd because it demands near-invulnerability against a Titled-rank monster, yet Saffra’s circumstances make her the one available candidate: before leaving, Vivi had covered her in a large collection of defensive spells, the product of what Jasper describes as an extensive and paranoid preparation.

The Dangerous Retrieval

Jasper does not send Saffra immediately. He first tests whether Vivi’s protections can withstand the Ghul-Feather and whatever attacks it may use. He also makes clear that the assignment should not fall to a child if any safer alternative exists, while arguing that refusing the only viable plan could condemn everyone aboard, including the other children. This debate establishes the operation’s moral pressure: Saffra is exposed to danger because the Convoy has run out of acceptable choices, not because her companions regard her life as expendable.

When the monsters begin gathering in earnest, the adventurers divide into teams along the upright section of the Convoy. Jasper gives Saffra precise but uncertain instructions. The emergency cores are somewhere in the Lounge, probably in the floor; she must take only two of the eight, place them in her inventory if possible, and return quickly. Two cores should be enough to reactivate the aether cannons while leaving the Ghul-Feather interested in the detached engine car. Jasper admits that he may have overstated his knowledge of the Convoy’s workings, but insists that this is their best chance. He then leaves to cull the approaching monsters and tells Saffra not to die, both because her death would be disastrous and because Vivi would punish him for it.

Saffra’s approach reveals exactly what Vivi’s preparation has purchased. Because Saffra is only silver-rank, the enormous two-headed undead bird does not notice her until she is within roughly a hundred paces. Once it turns on her, its caw should be lethal, but the defenses protect her against sound attacks. Its first physical assault sends a concussive blast through the field, erasing terrain in a twenty-meter arc down to the stone beneath. The prismatic barrier, which had never before activated so visibly, flares with red, blue, and green light as it absorbs the level-1200 attack, leaving Saffra alive though unsteady.

The Ghul-Feather follows with spear-length feathers that strike the ground around her, and then with an area of necromantic energy that withers the long grass from sunshine-colored green to white, gray, and finally ash. The magic is so dense that anything below level one thousand would have died inside it, but another of Vivi’s defenses carries Saffra through unharmed. When the creature finally abandons its preferred distance and swoops down, its gigantic talons slide uselessly across the prismatic barrier. Saffra raises her wand while trembling, and the gesture is enough to bluff the monster into retreating. The retreat is not a victory achieved by overpowering the Ghul-Feather; it is a victory of protected endurance, nerve, and the creature’s own fear once its attacks prove meaningless.

The Engineers and the Cores

Saffra reaches the engineers and gives them the situation in blunt operational terms. The Convoy has derailed, the Ghul-Feather has torn the engine away, the aether cannons are disabled, and monsters are already beginning to swarm. She asks for two emergency cores and points to the glowing orbs, briefly wondering whether they can simply be pulled from the wall. The engineers are shocked that a level-1200 undead creature caused the damage and even more surprised that Saffra passed it alive, but the immediate danger leaves no room for prolonged explanation.

The tall, thin engineer wearing spectacles provides the necessary procedure. The emergency sockets are in the center of the Lounge floor: the carpet must be pulled up, the cores placed in the sockets, and the lever pulled in that order because the mechanism has no safeties. He deactivates two cores for her, turning their bright white glow dull gray while the remaining six shine more strongly. The cores are heavier than they appear, and Saffra nearly drops them when he hands them over, but she refuses to slow down. Her answer that she will be fine is less a statement of certainty than a decision to continue despite the danger.

Back aboard the Convoy, a maid silently assists her by opening the iron hatch with a gloved hand and a sharp pull. Saffra retrieves the two cores while onlookers question what she is doing. Inside the compartment are eight slots traced with artificing lines resembling those in the engine car. As the inert gray orbs approach, an invisible force pulls them from Saffra’s hands and seats them with heavy thunks. She then grasps the lever and pulls it. The train shudders as mana surges through the system; the gray cores turn white, hum with power, and discharge energy through the Convoy.

Restoration and Recognition

The mechanical success is immediate but physically costly. Saffra stares at the brilliantly glowing cores and realizes that she has actually completed the task, finding it almost easy only because Vivi’s enchantments have absorbed the impossible portion of the danger. Exhaustion weighs her down afterward, and she has to force herself to remain standing. She releases the mana sustaining an ice wall, allowing the construct to melt and lower her and the White Glove onto the floor before she reports to Lord Caldimore.

Saffra explains that the cores came from the engine car, that the level-1200 creature had severed it from the train, and that the disabled cannons had left everyone defenseless against the approaching swarm. Lord Caldimore reacts with genuine shock both to the monster’s level and to Saffra’s success in recovering the cores. She takes satisfaction in telling him how it was possible: Vivi had placed defensive spells on her, the engineers admitted her, and the Ghul-Feather had been unable to harm her. The account turns Vivi’s private preparation into publicly recognized competence while giving Saffra a concrete achievement of her own.

The retrieval therefore has consequences beyond restoring power. It proves that Saffra can act under battlefield pressure, communicate essential information, follow a dangerous technical procedure, and convert protection given by a stronger master into an effective rescue. It also changes the Convoy’s tactical position: once the cores feed mana back into the system, the aether cannons can operate again, giving the defenders a means to resist the monsters instead of merely waiting for the swarm to overrun them.

Narrative Significance

The action is structured as a reversal of scale. Saffra is silver-rank and initially so insignificant to the Ghul-Feather that it fails to notice her, while the monster’s level-1200 attacks can erase terrain and annihilate ordinary beings. Yet the decisive variable is not rank alone. Vivi’s layered defenses, the Convoy’s engineered sockets, the inert cores, and the lever all become participants in the rescue, forming a chain in which magic, machinery, instructions, and Saffra’s movement must work together.

The episode also gives material form to the relationship between Saffra and Vivi. Vivi is absent from the battlefield, but her caution remains active through the protections she placed on her apprentice. Saffra does not win by pretending to possess Vivi’s power; she survives by trusting the defenses, moving through terror, and completing the task those defenses make possible. The result is simultaneously an act of apprenticeship and a moment of independence: Vivi’s preparation opens the path, but Saffra is the one who walks it, retrieves the cores, restores the Convoy, and accepts recognition for what she has done.
